The South African educational efforts continue to grow each year. During the summer of 2000 A-MAN funded a study tour of 10 South African students ages 10 - 18 to attend the ISD&L Summer Academy for 2 weeks. The visit was a tremendous success with many of the students setting their sights on attending major universities in the U.S.

South Africa Site 1

In 1998 The ISD&L Center model was replicated by A-MAN in the Township of Mamelodi. Students in grades 1-6 study and participate in elementary science and technology projects. The program was implemented at the personal invitation of President Nelson Mandela.

South Africa Site 2

In 1999 A-MAN partnered with the Meyerspark Primary School in the capital city of Pretoria to implement an ISD&L model at the school. This school serves both local students and township students that are bussed to the site daily and on weekends. Also A-MAN was successful in developing a technical support activity to support the students and faculty from scientists at the South African National Laser Center.

South Africa Sites 3 and 4

In 2000-2001 working through Rotary International (US-RI) and a local Rotary Club in Pretoria, Bettye and Hal Walker were successful in completing a RI matching grant project to implement a R166,000 Computer Center and Internet capability at a rural area farm school. The farm school had no electricity prior to the project. This effort was the result of working in a partnership with (US-RI), local school officials, education department officials, the Ministry of Education leaders, private sector organizations and the ANC government. Based on the success achieved with this farm school the South African government has legislated the electrification of all farm schools across the country. In 2002 the second RI computer center project was completed at Ysterplaat Middle School in a Cape Town township.

South African MTN Science Center Site 5 and 6 Fezeka & Tygerberg Hospital

South African MTN Science Center, located in Cape Town has partnered with the South African Stars of A-MAN program to participate in science based educational projects for under privileged township students. Local students and parents will attend science and technology sessions utilizing computers, chemistry, electronics and environmental study projects.

In 2002 the third RI Computer Center project was completed at Fzeka High School. The grand opening is in March of 2004, in a township near Cape Town.

In 2003, the fourth RI Computer Center project was implemented at Tygerberg Children's Hospital primary school.
